Anne Dempsey Gray, 54, of Wilson, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in her home surrounded by family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, December 6, 2025, 2:00 PM, First Baptist Church, followed by visitation. Anne’s wish was for her service to be a sea of color and requested people to wear her favorite color, purple.
Anne was a strong, determined and courageous person, who battled ALS with grace and dignity. Although this horrible disease took her from us far too soon, she never lost her faith in God.
Even though Anne had no children of her own, she had many that loved her as they would a mother, especially our granddaughter, Allie. She loved these children with the kind of unconditional love that only a mother has, teaching them, encouraging them and praying with them. Anne was a truly amazing woman, who was deeply loved.
She graduated from Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, VA and attended the Richard Bland College of William and Mary.
Many will remember Anne as the owner and manager of Subs Plus for 21 years.
Anne is survived by her husband, Fred Gray; parents, Dannie and Becky Sheffield Dempsey of Chesterfield, VA; sister, Nancy Dempsey of Miamisburg, OH; sisters-in-law, Ann Gray of Williamston and Fran Davis of Black Creek; step-daughter, Elisabeth Gray of Wilson; grandchildren, Megan Braswell, Cody Braswell, Aaron Whitley, Andrew Whitley, and Allie Whitley all of Wilson; nieces, Jessica Castaneda of Black Creek, Hannah Wilcher, and Megan Wilcher of Miamisburg, OH; nephew, Zach Wilcher of Miamisburg, OH; five great-grandchildren; six great-nieces; three great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; one great-great-niece.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to any of these charities: ALS United of North Carolina, alsnc.org, Bridging Voices bridgingvoice.org, Team Gleason teamgleason.org, or Compassionate Care ALS ccals.org
