Annie Mae Summerlin Crumpler, 97, of Elm City, died Saturday, August 31, 2024, in her home.
Funeral, Tuesday, 2:00 PM, at Wilson Memorial Service, Wilson, followed by visitation. Interment, Cedar Grove Cemetery, Elm City.
Annie Mae married H.C. Crumpler in October, 1947, and was his wife for over 70 years until his death in February, 2018. She was a daughter of Charlie and Rosa Bridgers Summerlin of Edgecombe County; her sisters were Mamie Reason, Doris Newcomb, Margie Lamm and Daisy Pittman; brothers were Frank, James, Thomas, Jack, Yates and Willie Summerlin. Living today is a sister, Beatrice Webb of Elm City; brothers, Melvin Summerlin and Clifton Summerlin (his friend, Janice Raynor) of Elm City.
She was not just a farmer’s wife; she was a farmer herself. After the last bundle of tobacco was tied and sold, they always enjoyed their trips to the mountains with sister, Daisy, and husband, Johnny Pittman. Some fun memories were made on those trips. After retiring in 1987, their mornings were spent meeting family and friends at McDonalds and Bojangles. As noted, there were fourteen brothers and sisters. There was always love between them. Four of the brothers served in World War II. She was the letter writer for her Mom. She made sure she knew her boys were okay. Annie was a lady that could do anything from cooking, beautiful embroidery, quilting, beautiful flower arrangements and a very talented seamstress. Above all that, her passion was her home and yard. There were very few days you would not find her working in her yard. Annie and H.C. were members of Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Elm City.
Surviving is her daughter, Sandy Ann Crumpler; son, Henry Wayne Crumpler; grandchildren, Tanner Clay Proctor, Tonya Summerlin, Tara Jayroe; great-grandchildren, Joey Clay, Rebecca, Lawson, Elana and Walker. In addition is her sister-in-law, Janice Summerlin, and an extended family of amazing in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
A special note of thanks to Stacy Manning, a neighbor and sister in all sense of the word. She showed love and care for our Mom; Thank you is extended to Hospice Care of Nash General Hospital. Special thanks to Shelly and Takita for their help and kindness.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Oak Grove FWB Church, 5921 Bridgersville Rd, Elm City, NC 27822-8948.
