Barbara Brett

Barbara Braddy Felton Brett, 87, of Raleigh, formerly of Wilson, died Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

The funeral will be Saturday, September 9 at 10:00 AM, at the First United Methodist Church in Wilson, NC. Visitation will take place following the service in the church parlor.

Barbara was born the oldest of five children born to Mary Virginia and Billy Braddy on August 1, 1936, in New Bern, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband “Billy” William Thomas Felton, husband Lawrence Brett, Jr., and younger brothers William Marshall Braddy and Edward Raymond Braddy.

Barbara graduated from New Bern High School, attended East Carolina University, and received her BS Degree in Psychology from Atlantic Christian (Barton) College.

She enjoyed a successful career with the American Cancer Society, determined to make a difference in the quest to find a cure for the disease that took the life of her younger brother at age 23. During her career she received many awards and recognition for her dedication.

With her love of music, she sang in the church choir at Centenary Methodist Church in New Bern and First United Methodist Church in Wilson, where she raised her children. In addition, she enjoyed singing with the Wilson Chorale, traveling with the ensemble to perform in Washington, DC, the Grove Park Inn, and the Biltmore House. Her children, grandchildren, and brothers Doug and Stan were loyal supporters of her musical endeavors and faithfully attended concerts in Wilson and “on the road.” Following the premature death of her first husband Billy, Barbara was a devoted wife to Lawrence for 18 years. They enjoyed attending Sunday school and church, events at the Wilson Country Club, and the Wilson Cotillion. Barbara loved to dance! She also relished several European trips with Lawrence, finding joy in keeping a journal and bringing back special gifts for her children and grandchildren.

In her later years, Barbara relocated to Raleigh to enjoy retirement at Magnolia Glen. Because she loved being with others and was a true social butterfly, Barbara enjoyed daily activities including water aerobics, chorus, and field trips. Spending time with her dear companion, Sherley, was the highlight of each day. His friendship and dedication meant the world to her and her family!

During her final months, Elsie’s Place, Oumie, and the caregiver team provided Barbara with a loving, comfortable home, and wonderful support for the family.

Barbara will be remembered for her love of God, family, and friends. Family reunions at the beach and watching sea gulls, celebrating holidays, sunshine, and clouds brought her such joy. The memory of her smile and love will live forever in our hearts!

Barbara is survived by her loving family: daughters, Valerie Felton Morgan of Charlotte and Ginny Felton Ellison (Chip) of Clayton; son, Tommy Felton of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren, Ashley Ball (Chris), Ridge Morgan, William Ellison (Yiazelliz); and great-grandson, Avery Clay Ellison.
