Bettie Woodard

Bettie Smith Woodard, 88, of Wilson, died Monday, June 16, 2025.

Funeral, Friday, 10:00 AM, at Wilson Memorial Service followed by visitation. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park.

Bettie graduated from Elm City High School, Class of 1955. She earned her associate’s degree in business and worked at Hackney Brothers for many years.

She was a lifelong member of Upper Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church where she served as a bookkeeper, secretary, and was very proud of her work with The Primitive Hymns.

Bettie was a lifetime Woman’s Club Member, where she made many friends through the years. She was an active member of the Wilson and Lake Gaston Garden Clubs and was a Master Judge with the Garden Club of North Carolina. One of her favorite hobbies was floral arrangements.

She sang in the Wilson Chorale which she enjoyed very much. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 13 and served on the Tar Heel Girls State Commission.

She is survived by her husband J.E. Woodard; daughter, Elizabeth Logan (Mike) of Pikeville; son, John Cayton, Jr. (Martha) of Saratoga; grandchildren, Keith Wilson of Elm City, Edward Cayton (Casey) of Wilson, and Dr. Emily Cayton (David Weathersby) of Four Oaks; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Hinton, Kortney Wilson, Lane and Charlie Weathersby, Kinsley Cayton and baby boy Cayton expected in October, and great-great-granddaughter Natalie Hinton; sister, Edith Proctor of Oak Island; brother, Joe Smith of Elm City; step-sons, Michael Woodard (Rev. Sarah Woodard) of Durham and Jeff Woodard (Paula) of Mount Juliet, TN; and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
