Deane Phillips

Deane Bolton Phillips, 91, of Wilson, passed away on October 23, 2023. "Nanny" was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Wilson.

Deane was raised in Rockingham, NC. It was there she met her future husband, Bill. They were married in 1953, moved to Laurinburg, NC and joined the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. While being a homemaker, caring for her family and working outside the home, she remained active in her church. She served as leader of bereavement committees, decorating committees, and served as circle leader, as well as many years as Treasurer of the Presbyterian Women. In 2001, Deane was presented an "Honorary Life Membership" by the Presbyterian Women for her Christian dedication. Through these years, she was also a cornerstone at Scotland County Savings and Loan. After retirement, she volunteered for Hospice of Scotland County and always made time for her hobbies: playing bridge, sewing, cooking, and working in her beautiful yard.

In 2014, Deane and Bill moved to Wilson and soon afterwards became members of the First United Methodist Church. This church embraced them with a warm welcome.

Deane was preceded in death by her husband, William David Phillips; her son, William David Phillips, Jr.; her parents, Lacy Daniel Bolton and Grace Welch Bolton; and her sisters, Mary Landon and Helen Ramsey.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Gibbons and husband, Miller; her grandchildren, Walton Gibbons and wife, Kelly, Kate Putney and husband, Witt, David Gibbons and wife, Courtney, Will Phillips and Meg Phillips; her great-grandchildren, William Witt Putney IV, Virginia Grace Putney, and Miller Walton Gibbons III (Beau).

She is also survived by three sisters, Libby Taylor, Jane Marlowe and Meg Scott; sister-in-law, Eloise Dixon; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers for Deane and Bill over the past several years: Connie, Lisa, Judy, Kim, Allison, Bonnie, Verna, and Lacie; their special neighbor and friend, Don Berrier; and wonderful hospice nurses, Allison, Ashley, and Allyson.
