Don Anderson Barnes, loving husband and father of four, passed away peacefully at the age of 86.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 3rd from 6:00 to 7:30pm at Wilson Memorial Service, 2811 Fieldstream Dr. N, Wilson. Funeral, Sunday, 2:00PM, Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson, beside his wife, Beverly Green Barnes, who died May 1, 2021.
Don was born to Purvis Jasper and Nona Elizabeth Johnson Barnes in Wilson County. He met the love of his life, Beverly, in high school. They married on September 14th, 1957, in Kings Park, NY. Soon after marriage he went into the US Army. They welcomed their first child, Denise, at Fort Bragg. After serving his country they returned to Long Island. Over the next several years three sons were born, Don Jr., Dwayne, and Dwight.
In NY, Don worked at Glamore Motor Sales in Smithtown. After a few years, he opened Commack Auto Body in Commack and operated it for 10 years. In 1980, the Barnes family returned to Lucama. They purchased a business and evolved it into “The Village Grocery and Grill”. After this pivotal point in their life, they became “Mr. Don and Mrs. Beverly from the Village” to many generations of families and friends from the surrounding community. As a team, Don and Beverly served food and support to countless number of families in need. Never thought of them as customers, they always considered the community as “The Village Family” regardless of race, color or religion. Family, friends, motorcycles, hot rods, and supporting Veterans was his life. They were active members of Lucama United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly in 2021, his parents, a brother, Fredrick Lee (“Freddie”) Barnes.
Surviving is four children, Denise (Barry) Turnage of Wilson; sons, Don Barnes Jr. of Lucama, Dwayne Barnes of Garner, and Dwight (Diane) Barnes of Kenly. There are 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brother Phillip Deans Barnes of Kings Park, NY.
Memorials are suggested to Lucama Global Methodist Church, 3204 Brentwood Drive N, Wilson NC 27896-6949.
