Ed Finch

April 12, 1958 — April 7, 2022

Edwin Lawrence “Ed” Finch, 63, of Wilson, died Thursday, April 7, 2022, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

The funeral will take place Tuesday, April 12 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Wilson. The family will receive family and friends Monday, April 11, 4:00 - 7:00 pm in the church fellowship hall.

Ed, the youngest of three children, was born in 1958 and grew up in Wayne County, NC. He was an athlete and loved sports (baseball, in particular). One of the highlights of his young life was playing on the 1974 3A State Baseball Championship Team at Charles B. Aycock High School. Thereafter, he continued his baseball career at UNC-Wilmington, where he played and coached. After graduating, he moved to Wilson and married his high school sweetheart and “love of his life”, Nora Davis. There, Ed continued his passion for sports at Sportsville and DSG before spending the majority of his career at EB Sports.  He loved his work family and enjoyed a fulfilling career of encouraging young athletes, assisting coaches and parents, and befriending all of his customers with integrity and heart. Ed had friends from many different walks of life, who were assured by his steadfastness of character, quiet, selfless demeanor, and devotion to service above self. He put others first–every one, every time.

Ed loved music of all kinds, backyard birds, morning devotions with Nora, mowing the grass, ball games (of course), First United Methodist Church, cooking on the grill, and just being at home with his “three girls”. His greatest love in life was his family. He loved extended family gatherings, big and small, and treasured those relationships. Ed was reserved, dependable, and humble, with an often surprising, twinkly sense of humor. He had a giant heart and a small ego.

Ed was preceded in death by his father Alton Lawrence Finch.

He is survived by his wife, Nora, daughters, Leah Finch of Raleigh and Leslie Finch of Memphis, TN; mother, Alice Daniel Finch of Pikeville; sister, Teresa Bolding of Raleigh; brother, Warren Finch, (Fe) of Pikeville; sister-in-law, Peggy Moseley (Charles); brothers in law, Jim Davis (Nan), and Gerry Davis (Carolyn); and nieces and nephews who adored him and were dearly loved by him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894-1423.
