Wilson, North Carolina - Evelyn Spradlin Meyer, a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, companion, friend, and teacher, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 24, 2025.
She is survived by her children, Louis B. Meyer III (Staci), Shannon M. Cave (Philip), and Adam Burden Meyer; grandchildren, Philip Price Cave, Jr., Julian Attaway Cave, Eliza Leigh Meyer, Margaret Evelyn Meyer, and Audrey Elizabeth Meyer; nephew, Charles Lawrence Smith, niece, Marley Smith Knapp; great-niece, Rachel Catherine Knapp; and very special friend, William Courtney McGowan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, former N.C. Supreme Court Justice Louis B. Meyer, Jr.; parents, Henry and Ida Mae Pond Spradlin; and sister, Patrica S. Smith.
Born in Anniston, Alabama and raised in the nearby town of Oxford, Evelyn graduated from the University of Montevallo when it was known as Alabama College for Women, and began a career as an elementary school teacher that would span more than 40 years.
She met her husband, Louis, when he was serving in the U.S. Army at Fort McClellan in Alabama, and they raised three children and shared a loving marriage in Wilson for more than 40 years.
Evelyn taught first grade and kindergarten as a public-school teacher in Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Wilson, Rock Ridge, and Nash County. She found joy in building an enduring love for learning in her students.
She loved reading, sewing, playing bridge, spending time at Topsail Beach, raising her children, and winning a hard-fought game of Trivial Pursuit.
After her husband’s death and her retirement from teaching, Evelyn met Bill McGowan, her very special friend and devoted companion with whom she shared 25 years of good times playing golf, traveling, and relaxing at Topsail Beach.
There will be a private burial at Maplewood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at West Nash United Methodist Church in Wilson, and visitation with the family thereafter in the fellowship hall.
The family would like to thank the nurses and other staff at Swift Creek Health Center in Cary and Transitions LifeCare hospice care for their devoted support and care of Evelyn.
