George Measell, Jr.

WILSON - George Samuel Measell, Jr., 86, died Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

The visitation will be Saturday, August 4th, 11 AM to 12 PM, at Wilson Memorial Service.  A memorial service will be Saturday, August 11th, 2 pm, at River Road Church, Baptist in Richmond, VA with a reception following.

Sam, as he was called by his friends or Papa Sam/Uncle Sam by his extended family, died in his sleep at home in Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and daughter Karen (Bruce) of the home; sons, Sam (Laura) and Keith (Anne). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lt. Genevieve Pike Flatgard (Mark), Ian Pike (Dani), Mark Measell, Scott Measell, Joe Measell, Katie Measell and Kyle Measell.

He was preceded in death by his parents George Samuel Measell, Senior and Virginia Sturgis Measell and his youngest son, Kyle Hardee Measell and daughter-in-law, Katy Wilson Measell.

He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Norview High School. Sam served in the Army from 1953-1956 in Germany and worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for many years as an agent and worked his way up to District Manager in Richmond, Virginia.

Sam loved sports. He played minor league baseball and coached little league for many years. He got real pleasure from watching his grandchildren play sports, especially baseball. It should not be forgotten that Redskin football and Tarheel basketball were also close to his heart.

He was a Deacon for River Road Church for 40 years and loved every church he attended. Sam was a truly religious man who walked the walk even more than he talked the talk. He demonstrated love in his everyday life.  He was consistently positive and had a friendly smile for everyone.

Sam was a wonderful husband for 65 years and a devoted family man.  He was an active Dad who always had time for his children and his grandchildren.
