Harriet Glover

Harriet Conger Glover of Wilson passed away peacefully at her home, Wednesday, April 1st, surrounded by her children.

Harriet was born on August 8, 1934, in Edenton, North Carolina to Nellie Rose Conger and Joseph Harold Conger.

She graduated from Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh in 1954 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. While at the University, she was introduced on a blind date to “a cute med student,” James Bunyan (“Doc”) Glover. Following her graduation from college, they wed and shared a devoted marriage of 52 years until Dr. Glover’s death in 2008.

Harriet began her career in education by teaching neighborhood children in her backyard in Edenton during the summer months. She taught in elementary schools in Durham, North Carolina, and Mountain Brook, Alabama. After the family’s move to Wilson in 1965 to start her husband’s medical career, she devoted herself to raising her children before briefly working in real estate. She later returned to teaching as a tutor at Greenfield School, where she was respected and loved.

A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, Harriet was baptized and married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton. Upon moving to Wilson, she became a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and was a dedicated parishioner for more than 50 years. Her service included teaching children Sunday school in the same room for 17 years.

Harriet maintained a wide array of interests and community involvements. She was a member of the Edgecombe-Wilson Chapter of the Colonial Dames and the Wilson Medical Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and tennis, and especially loved attending University of North Carolina basketball games with her husband.

She found particular happiness at her home in Morehead City, North Carolina, where she spent many summers. There she enjoyed time with family and friends participating in water aerobics, walking along Evans Street, and sitting on her porch overlooking the Bogue Sound.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James Bunyan Glover; her brother, Joseph Harold Conger, Jr.; and her sister, Martha Conger Leary.

She is survived by her sons, James Bunyan Glover, Jr. (Tina) and John Conger Glover (Sallie), both of Raleigh; and by her five grandchildren, Sallie, Jack, Anderson, Lucy, and Ella.

The family expresses its sincere gratitude to her devoted caregivers Lisa, Tammy, Brooke, and Debora for their compassionate and loving care. They also extend appreciation to her neighbors on Salem Street for their kindness and friendship, which brought her great joy.

A memorial service will be conducted at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 202 Goldsboro St E, Wilson, NC, at 2:00 on Thursday, April 9th, followed by a reception at the church.
