John Smith

John E. Smith, 87, of Goldsboro and formerly of Wilson, died Monday, July 17, 2023.

Funeral, Friday, 2:00 PM, at Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont.  The visitation will be at Wilson Memorial Service, Thursday, 6:00-700 PM. 

John was born and reared in Fremont.  He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and proudly served for ten years during the Vietnam Conflict including a year in a remote location in Taipei, Taiwan.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Wilson Church of Christ and Ward Blvd Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife and soul mate, Etta Exum Smith, in May, 2011; parents, Ed and Martha Edmundson Smith; brother, W.T. Smith who died in 2022.

Surviving is a niece, Donna S. Barrett (Ken) of Pikeville; nephew, Tommy Smith (Darlene) of Belfast; great nieces, Krista Beamon (Taylor) of New Bern; Brandi Davis (Robert) and children, Ethan and Kendall of Pikeville; great nephews, Garrett Smith (Betty) stationed in Virginia and son, Rett Smith, and Will Barrett (Ashley) and children, Raegan and Presley of LaGrange.
