Matrene Newton

WILSON - Matrene Thorne Newton, 89, died Saturday, August 11, 2007. She was the widow of E. Sharpe Newton, Sr. She grew up in the Gardners township of Wilson county as a daughter of the late Robert J. and Pattie Wiggins Thorne. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma T. Jackson. "Red", as she came to be known, attended Guilford College. She and her husband were active in farming, and she worked with Watson and later Growers Cooperative Tobacco Warehouses. She was an avid Democrat and enjoyed working in the Garden Department of the Woman's Club and with the county Farm Bureau. Funeral, Tuesday, 11 AM, First Christian Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Surviving is a son, Eldon S. Newton, Jr.
