Harold “Peanut” Flora, 88, of Bailey, North Carolina, passed peacefully away on Monday, October 12th, 2026, surrounded by family.
A graveside service with Masonic Rites will be on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 2:00pm at the Bailey Cemetery in Bailey, North Carolina. The family will greet those in attendance following the service. All other times, the family will be at 12442 Benson St. Bailey, NC 27807.
Born on May 17th, 1938, he was the son of Owen and Rochelle Flora.
Peanut was an outgoing, big-hearted man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, no questions asked. In his younger years, he enjoyed fast cars, water activities, and serving his community. He spent eight years at Newport News Shipyard, where he served as a welding supervisor and helped weld submarines and space shuttles. However, his roots ran deep in Nash County, and he was called home.
Peanut’s love for his community was evident throughout his life. He served as a Bailey Town Commissioner for four years and was a trusted pillar of the community, inspecting vehicles for Bailey residents for more than 20 years. He also took great pride in his time as a Mason, having achieved the distinguished title of Master Mason.
One of Peanut’s greatest passions was working on and rebuilding cars, but nothing meant more to him than his family. He treasured the time spent with those he loved and built lasting relationships through his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others.
Those who knew Peanut will remember his sense of humor, honesty, strong work ethic, honesty, and unwavering love for his family. Above all, he cherished his family, his friendships, and his faith. His impact on the community and the lives he touched will not be forgotten, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents James Owen Flora and Rochelle Bryant Flora; daughter Sandra Flora; sister Peggy Perry; sister Shelby Wall; and son-in-law Edward Hamm.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Velma Flora; daughter, Janet Hamm of Bailey; son, Greg Flora of Bailey; grandsons, Lee Hamm (Lindsay Hamm) and Matthew Hamm (Haylee Hamm) of Bailey; great-grandchildren, Mason, Jessie, and Ryleigh.
He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Autism Society of North Carolina, 5121 Kingdom Way, Ste 100, Raleigh, NC 27607.
