Roland Godwin

William Roland Godwin, 83, of Black Creek, died Thursday, February 9, 2023.

Funeral, Sunday, 2:00 PM, Daniels Chapel OFWB Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing.

He was “Papa” to his family.  They enjoyed visiting the North Carolina mountains where his mother’s family originated.  He enjoyed cutting his grass and making sure the yard was in top condition.

Service in the National Guard was meaningful to him.  Community involvement began as a member of the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department in the 1960’s; a founding member of the Black Creek Ruritan Club, Cub Scoutmaster and a Little League Baseball Coach.  In local government, he served as a Town Commissioner for over 40 years and was Mayor for two years.

Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Gertrude Barnes Godwin; daughter, Lisa Skinner (Don) of Black Creek; son, Roger Godwin (Jennifer) of Black Creek; grandchildren, Spencer and Megan Skinner, Sarah and Macy Godwin, and Casey Flora; sister, Joyce Walls of Black Creek.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Daniels Chapel OFWB Church, 4828 Frank Price Church Rd, Wilson, NC 27893-7873.
