Evelyn Hooks

Fremont - Evelyn Gray Mooring Hooks, 90, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A memorial service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held Saturday, September 22, at 10 a.m. at Fremont Missionary Baptist Church with Pastors Rudy West and Timothy Gore officiating.  The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.  Burial will then follow in the Hooks Family Cemetery.

Evelyn was born in Wayne County in 1928 to the late Marcellus Mooring and Bertie Blow Mooring and was the wife of the late Harold Martin Hooks, Sr. She was preceded in death by a sister, Neta Mae Elmore and brothers, Leroy Mooring and Chester Mooring.

She began a career with the Wayne County Board of Elections in the 1950s that spanned almost four decades, serving as Supervisor from the 1970s until her retirement.

Evelyn was a member of Fremont Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and served in other capacities prior to her illness.  Following her retirement, she also enjoyed volunteering in her community with Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by her sons, Martin Hooks and wife, Dianne, of Goldsboro, Tommy Hooks and wife, Beth, of Fremont and Gene Hooks and wife, Cheryl, of Fremont; nine grandchildren, Eric Hooks and wife, Niki, Shannon Horton and husband, Allen, Christopher Hooks, Mary Beth Hooks, Lara Smith and husband, Rob, Kyle Hooks, Jennifer Johnson, Megan Johnson, Amy Johnson and husband, Matthew King; and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances West and Eleanor Ballance, both of Fremont.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Countryside Village, the nurses and caregivers, from Community Home Care & Hospice, especially Sheree and Carol, and a special niece, Sandy Bundgaard, who provided such loving care during her final days.
